Press Release: DOWNLOAD A PDF VERSION OF THIS PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Group Launches Movement to Bring Lutheran Worship into 21st Century
SAINT PAUL, MINN (June 7, 2007) — Creators of the innovative Lutheran Hymnal for Church and Home will kick off a movement to bring Lutheran worship and tradition into the 21st century at the ReClaim Lutheran Worship Conference June 24-25.
ReClaim’s work was begun in 2004 by a group of scholars, pastors, and lay persons with backgrounds in the ELCA as a positive response to that denomination’s proposals for a new hymnal. In 2006 ReClaim Resources released its introductory edition of Lutheran Hymnal for Church and Home. ReClaim continues its work toward a complete hymnal in print and electronic formats that can be used on its own or as a supplement to current hymnals.
While most Lutheran hymnals are designed as service books for use on Sunday mornings, ReClaim’s Lutheran Hymnal for Church and Home is designed for use both in Sunday services and home devotions. It draws from the Lutheran Reformation to create services and devotional tools that build faith, bring meaning, and aid in church growth.
Keynote speakers at the conference include: Dr. Walter Sundberg, Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, who will speak on “ReClaiming the Absolution”; Dr. Michael B. Aune, Pacific Lutheran Seminary in Berkeley, California, who will speak on “ReClaiming Ritual”; and Professor Gracia Grindal of Luther Seminary, who will speak on “ReClaiming Hymnody,” with musical highlights from the forthcoming full edition of the Lutheran Hymnal for Church and Home.
A conference high point will be the presentation of the newest musical setting for ReClaim by composer Doug Norquist.
Because of the close ties of ReClaim’s committee members to the ELCA, the seven conference workshops are each designed to equip attendees for thoughtful and informed discussions about hymnals and faith. One workshop will prepare voting members to the denomination’s Churchwide Assembly in August for the vote on affirming the ELCA’s new hymnal.
Reformation scholar Oliver K. Olson, will sign copies of his new book Reclaiming the Lutheran Liturgical Heritage. The book follows Martin Luther’s reform, analyzes how it fares in today’s worship service climate, and makes the case for why the Lutheran church should reclaim its confessional liturgical understanding in light of developments in recent hymnals.
ReClaim Lutheran Worship Conference will be held June 24-25 at Roseville Lutheran Church, Roseville, Minn. For more details and to register for the conference, visit www.ReclaimLutheranWorship.org
