Keynote Speakers

Saturday 9:00 am

Gracia Grindal            "How Liturgy Makes Christians"
Professor of Rhetoric,
Luther Seminary, St. Paul

While Lutherans have spent the past fifty years arguing about what kind of music to have in church on Sunday, they have missed that the Sunday service makes Christians by the hearing of the word. In the meantime the services changed radically without much controversy or argument. How and why did Lutherans turn so completely from the idea that church was a time to hear God's Word when God, through the Word, ministered to those who were there through Word and Sacrament, hymns, liturgy and prayer. This yielded to the notion that worship was only for Christians, and did not "make" them since only Christians should be present while the "mysteries" of the sacraments were being celebrated. This understanding had devastating implications for evangelism, for the making and nurturing of Lutherans.

Saturday 1:15 pm

Molly Juntunen Molly Juntunen           "Role of Music in Kingdom Growth"
Kingdom Expansion Pastor,
Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines, Iowa

The question of music in the church service has been thought to be vital, and while it is, that question should be addressed after other decisions about the gathering have been made.

Pastor Molly oversees Hope’s satellite congregation ministry; including Lutheran Church of Hope North Branch in Ankeny and Immersion, a young adult community meeting at the West Des Moines campus. In addition to being part of Hope’s regular preaching, teaching, and pastoral care team, Pastor Molly leads the development of new satellites, oversees Hope’s growing internship program, and leads teams visioning for other ministry projects that expand Hope outside the walls of the growing West Des Moines campus.
